Accidental Discharge at MSY - 7/25/2011 -

At approximately 10:15 a.m., there was an accidental firearm discharge at the United Airline ticket counter. A firearm was in the process of being cleared as checked baggage when it discharged a single round. An airline employee was injured and transported to the hospital with a non-life threatening injury. The passenger who was checking the firearm was remanded to police custody pending further investigation. Under TSA regulations, travelers must declare all firearms, ammunition, and parts to the airline during the ticket counter check-in process. The firearm must be unloaded in a hard-sided container that can be locked, subject to inspection by the TSA. More information about TSA requirements can be found at
