Safety Management System (SMS)
What is an airport Safety Management System (SMS)?
A Safety Management System (SMS) is a proactive and systematic approach to managing safety by identifying and resolving safety concerns at an airport through collaboration and analysis. The SMS relies on each individual to participate in and improve safety as part of their daily work activities by working safely and reporting safety concerns.
SMS consists of four components:
- Safety Policy includes establishing and managing safety policies and identifying goals and objectives to measure the performance of the SMS. SMS requires management commitment from the highest levels of the organization.
- Safety Risk Management is founded on performing risk assessments to identify hazards proactively, assessing risks, and developing controls to reduce hazards to acceptable levels.
- Safety Promotion includes employee training to identify and report hazards as well as promotional efforts to encourage a positive safety culture and communicate safety information.
- Safety Assurance measures the effectiveness of the airport’s SMS through evaluations and audits, allowing for continuous improvement.
The Louis Armstrong New Orleans International SMS and Safety Policy Statement
At the Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport, our SMS focus is on the movement and non-movement areas on the Air Operations Area (AOA). To this end, the Airport has set our safety policy and objectives that serves as a framework for reaching our goals and the metrics the Airport will use to measure safety progress.
Our Airport SMS Policy Statement highlights senior leadership’s commitment to providing resources to identify and resolve safety concerns in the movement and non-movement areas through data collection and collaboration within the Airport community.
Report A Hazard
Everyone who works at the Airport plays a part in maintaining a safe Airport. If you notice a potential safety concern in the Air Operations Area (AOA) – particularly the movement or non-movement areas, please use the following link to submit a SMS report:
*For hazardous conditions in the movement and non-movement areas that should be addressed immediately, contact AVCOM at 504-303-7700 to submit the safety report*
The SMS report form allows you to submit the report confidentially and anonymously, if you choose to do so. It is important to know that when we share information in the SMS process, we do so with the intention of learning, not finding fault in one another. Every report is reviewed and helps us improve how we operate in the movement and non-movement areas of the Airport. Your input is essential to keeping our Airport safe for everyone.
